Manchester United has gotten off to a strong start in the new English Premier League season by beating rival Chelsea, 3-1, in the FA Community Shield at London’s Wembley Stadium Sunday.

United will open the regular season against Newcastle Monday next week.

The Community Shield is considered the official start of the season by pitting the league champion against the FA Cup winner. Chelsea claimed both the league and cup crowns last season, while United finished runner-up.

Korean midfielder Park Ji-sung started as a side striker. He played the first half before being replaced by Luis Nani.

This season is Park’s sixth year in the Premiership. He did not suffer a major injury last season but failed to show notable performances, starting just 10 of 38 games. He scored three goals in 17 matches, including those in which he came in as a substitute.

Park is pumped to do better this season following his stellar play at the South Africa World Cup, but must compete for a starting spot with Nani, Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan.

KBS color commentator Han Joon-hee said, “Manchester players are not as good as they were when the team had Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. Since United failed to win the regular season title last season, it cannot afford to give sluggish players the chance to play.”

Community Shield

Community Shield, news Community shield

The Football Association Community Shield (formerly the Charity Shield) is a one-off annual English club association football match contested between the Premier League Champions and the FA Cup winners at the national football stadium, Wembley Stadium in London. It is played as a season opening game between the previous season's league/cup winners (or the league runners up if the league champions won The Double of league and cup). The winners of the game receive the Shield as a trophy for the year, while players also receive individual winners medals. The current holders are Manchester United, who beat the 2009–10 season Double winners Chelsea 3–1 in normal time in the 2010 Community Shield held on 8 August 2010.

Organised by the Football Association, proceeds from the game are distributed to community-based initiatives and charities around the country. Revenue from the gate receipts and match programme sales is distributed to the 124 clubs who competed in The FA Cup from the First Round onwards, for onward distribution to charities and projects of their choice, while the remainder is distributed to the FA's national charity partners. The fixture is seen as a relatively minor honour and is treated almost as a pre-season friendly by many fans and clubs, used as a barometer of fitness levels and team tactics for the coming season. There is no extra time in the game, with draws after 90 minutes settled by penalty shootout; teams are allowed to use six substitutes instead of the normal three.

The fixture was first played in the 1908–09 season, replacing Sheriff of London Charity Shield. The game was initially played at various grounds in various teams, generally settling on the league champion versus FA Cup winner format from 1930, becoming a season opening game from 1954. The present format of a Wembley-based game between the league champions and FA Cup winners, or league runners-up, dates from 1974, being played at the current Wembley stadium since 2007. While the old Wembley Stadium was being demolished and rebuilt, the game was held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Manchester United F.C has 18 times won the community shield (1908, 1911, 1952, 1956, 1957, 1965, 1967, 1977, 1983, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010).

Will City Buy the Premier League? - Betting News with Betfred

The World Cup seems a long time over now and many football fanatics will have been getting restless, but fear not because the Premier League is back on the horizon.

This weekend sees Chelsea and Manchester United play the traditional curtain raiser that is the Community Shield at Wembley and the defending Premier League champions are 11/8 to repeat their victory over the Red Devils in this game 12 months ago.

However, when the season proper gets underway on the 14th August, all eyes will be on Manchester City as they have blown the rest of the Premier League out of the water when it comes to spending, bringing in the likes of David Silva, Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov while deals for James Milner and Mario Balotelli are also in the pipeline.

The Premier League odds make City 5/1 shots with Betfred to win the title, and this could be a good bet.

You can tell City have got some of their rivals running scared by the fact that players from both Chelsea and United have come out and taken a swipe at the billionaires from Eastlands.

First of all United's Paul Scholes stated football fans "do not know yet" exactly how good City are going to be this campaign.

Meanwhile Chelsea's Salomon Kalou has weighed in by saying he is "not sure" if Roberto Mancini's side will be stronger than last season.

"Just because you bring in 10 new players every year doesn't mean you are going to finish top of the table," the Ivory Coast forward said.

"Spending a lot of money on new signings doesn't guarantee anything."

The blue half of Manchester boasted an impressive record against the teams sure to be their title rivals in the shape of Chelsea, United and Arsenal last season and will need to repeat that this campaign, which kicks off with a clash with the team that pipped them to Champions League football in the shape of Spurs.

Despite City failing to break into the Premier League top four last season, many football fans fancy the club to copy the likes of Jack Walker's Blackburn and Roman Abramovich's Chelsea and 'buy' the title.

However, they will need to gel as a squad and ensure they don't draw as many games as they did last season, and these are no mean feats. The football betting odds suggest they should win a trophy, but it might not be the league.

My Tip for the 2010/11 Premier League Season:

It's hardly controversial, but I expect Chelsea to prove too strong for an ageing United side and a City side which could struggle with so many big egos in one squad - so 11/8 for the Blues to retain their title looks a good option.
