The Greatest Football Team Of All-Time

With the 2010 World Cup only 58 days away I thought it time to wet the appetite of all football fans, right across the globe, by selecting MY OWN personal 'Greatest Football Team Of All-Time.'

Now football is without doubt a game of opinions, and you may consider the players I have selected as not worthy of their place in my greatest team, or feel I have missed out players who you would deem as more laudable of selection, which I fully appreciate.

This was not as tricky an exercise as I had initially thought, as so few players are the cream in all the fundamental categories deemed in my selection process.

The criteria for which I based my miscellany on was as follows:

* No pre-war players (footballer was a cruder game back then & the competition was less fierce)
* Great technical ability
* Sustained excellence over a number of years
* An ability to inspire others
* Fervour for battle

There are 12 Europeans and 4 South Americans, and they all satisfy the criteria in abundance.

Four of them played in the 1950's, seven started in the 1960's, two in the 1970's, two in the 1980's and one in the 1990's.

No one country is represented by more than two players.

Congratulations to Jenson Button - F1 Champion 2009

Hats off to Jenson Button as he joins an elite group of British Formula One Champions, following Sunday's Grand Prix at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil.

His fifth placed finish was good enough to secure the title from his nearest rival Rubens Barrichello, and at the same time secured the constructors title for his Brawn GP Team, in the penultimate race of the season.

Jenson won six Formula 1 races during the 2009 season in: Australia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Spain, Monaco, and Turkey.

It goes without saying that all fans of Formula One motor racing, myself included, along with everyone directly involved within the sport itself, in whatever capacity, wish Felipe Massa a full and speedy recovery following his accident at the weekend.

In the second round of qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix the Brazilian was struck on the helmet at high-speed by a suspension spring that had fallen from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn.
He subsequently crashed head on into a tyre wall.
After about five minutes Felipe was removed from his wrecked car, taken by ambulance to a waiting medical helicopter, and flown to hospital.

Massa's father, mother and pregnant wife have flown in to Hungary from Brazil to be at his bedside.

His condition at present has been described as 'severe but not critical' after surgery on his fractured skull in Hungary.

At this time all our thoughts are with him and his family.

After seeing pictures of a certain young lady in a London newspaper this morning, I thought it only fitting to do a little bit of research on the background of this rising star of the Brazilian women’s national football team, and look at her own unquestionably unique and rather remarkable individual talent............as the female game’s answer to Rory Delap, (below left)
the man whose deadly throw-ins have attracted a host of media attention, and have been described in some circles as 'weapons of mass
destruction on the football field.'
Delap’s gargantuan throw-ins have been the talk of football this season as Stoke City have taken their Premier League bow.


Leah Lynn Gabriela Fortune was born in San Paulo,
Brazil to American parents.
It turns out her dual citizenship is a blessing in disguise: Leah can play with one foot in each continent, straddling playing time between her club, Team Chicago, and the U-20 Brazilian national team.
However, all bets are off once Leah turns 21, when she'll have to commit exclusively to the USA or Brazil.

But for now, as the youngest player on the team at 17, Fortune is taking full advantage of the opportunities that come with a starting role for Brazil.
With a 30-goal surplus against opponents over the course of seven games, Leah and her teammates stormed through the CONMEBOL South American U-20 Championships last March, as if every game was a carnival.


However the headline cascading across Brazilian televisions and newspapers during the Tournament was 'Leah Cambalhota Mortal' - for Leah is famed for owning a trick the Brazilians had never seen before! A throw-in in which she levitates the ball into the box with her hands by means of a somersault!

In her second game in the CONMEBOL, Leah connected with forward Pamela on a flip throw for the team's first headed goal in a 5-0 rout of Paraguay. 'The Brazilians had never seen anything before like it, so they were going nuts. The crowd loved it,' said Leah. Her father and Team Chicago program director, Hudson Fortune, was also on hand to see the games. 'Every time Leah had an opportunity for a throw-in, the crowd would stand and chant her name in hopes she would do a flip throw.'
And hers has a nickname, 'The Mortal Somersault.'

Leah may not be able to match Delap in the weights room, so she uses incredible leverage to get an insane amount of air underneath the ball and turn every throw in near the box into a poor man's corner, not unlike what Delap endeavours to do when he unleashes a throw for his club side.
'The Mortal Somersault' even earned Leah time on Brazil's 'SportsCenter' highlights reel following an U-20's win over Argentina.
The 'cambalhota' is a front handspring from the sidelines that slings the ball into a box teeming with targets. Fortune's flip allows her to hone in on a roving player - a move that can turn the game on its head.

After a year of gymnastics as a child, she transferred the skill to soccer and has been executing the flip throw since she was 9. The closest thing to a corner kick, the 'cambalhota' leaves most defenders gob smacked at the sight of a throw-in with 20 extra yards of firepower.

The U-20 World Cup in Chile concludes on 7th December.

The bold pursuit of Ronaldinho finally came to an end for Manchester City last night when the Brazilian agreed to join AC Milan in a transfer worth up to £19.8million.

Now on the face of it, one would not normally associate the words 'International Fashion Model' and 'wife of a former Crystal Palace journeyman' in the same sentence.
And, when the footballer in question was candidly speaking, an inept, bungling, ham-fisted waste of space, you have to ask yourself how on earth did someone as monumentally rubbish as Nicola Ventola cop off with someone as gorgeous as Kartika Luyet.

Ventola, as Palace fans will remember was signed on a season-long loan from Italian giants Inter in August 2004, but had his season wrecked by injury.
As a result he made only three appearances, all from the bench. His solitary goal for the London Club - against Southampton on 7th May 2005, in the penultimate game of the season - would have kept the Eagles in the Premier League if they had not conceded a last minute equalizer.
And that was the end of Nicola Ventola's foray into English football, with his then manager Iain Dowie dispatching him back from whence he came - namely Italy, where he joined Atalanta for two seasons before moving on to his current club Torino in 2007.

It could be argued that had Ventola's goal kept Palace up, his name might have been etched in CPFC history for ever! However it didn't, there was to be no happy ending and so it is now simply inconsequential.

Kartika Luyet was born in Rio, Brazil to Malaysian and Swiss parents. She moved to Europe at 16, spent five years in France before moving to Italy, where she became something of a star by featuring in advertising campaigns for Fiat and appearing regularly on television.

Along with fellow Brazilian 'stunnas' Adriana Lima and Gisele Bundchen, she soon became a regular feature of the Italian celebrity circuit.

At the time the buck-toothed Brazilian superstar Ronaldo, well renowned for scoring as often on the pitch as off it, fancied a piece of the action with fellow Brazilian 'hotty' Kartika - but Ronaldo made a big mistake when invited to a fancy bash being laid on by Armarni in Milan.

He in turn invited along a young Italian under-21 teammate - one Nicola Ventola and as they say in Hollywood.........'The Rest is History.'

'My Goal Of The Week' - Marta Vieira da Silva for Brazil at the Women's World Cup.

'My Goal of the Week' was scored by Marta Vieira da Silva on 27th September, for Brazil against the US during their semi-final match in Hangzhou, China at the Women's World Cup 2007.

Marta, only 21 (pictured right) was born in Alagoas, Brazil and plays her club football in Sweden for 'Umea IK.'

She is the 2006 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year, was runner-up in 2005 and is currently the World Cup's leading scorer with seven goals in just five games.

Marta scored twice against the U.S, her second a magnificent individual effort in the 80th minute. Taking a pass from Renata Costa outside the penalty area, and with her back to goal she deftly flicked the ball with her left foot over both her head and that of U.S.defender Tina Ellertson to break into the box. She then cut back inside to avoid defender Catherine Whitehill, before firing a low 12-yard shot with her right foot into the bottom corner of the net to put Brazil 4-0 up.

Brazil's 4-0 rout of the Americans in the semi-final played in front of 47,818 at Hangzhou Dragon Stadium, saw the U.S teams 51-match unbeaten run come to an end.

Now Brazil will play tournament favourites Germany in the Final on Sunday 30th September at Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium.

The U.S. will face Norway for third place on Sunday in a match that will precede the Final.
